Cyclist and Pedestrians Hurt By Proposed Ontario No Fault Insurance Changes
November 16, 2009
I was just reading some comments on an Ontario cycling web site. The Ontario government is about to reduce the no fault insurance medical and rehabilitation benefits by 50%. Drivers will supposedly have an option to pay more premium to increase the coverage back to the current levels. But what about the pedestrian struck by a car? What about the cyclist that is run down by a negligent driver? Remember the drunk driver that ran into the bus stop shelter in Toronto a few years ago? If those poor accident victims were injured under the new scheme and were not deemed "catastrophically" injured - their coverage would be at the lower levels. If they don't own their own cars they would have no chance at increasing the medical and rehabilitation costs to the current $100,000.00.
Why is it that the Ontario Liberal government is so bound and determined to give money to the car insurance companies at the expense of the people they are supposed to be representing? There are many people throughout this province that do not have a car and therefore do not have any car insurance. They are going to be put at a much higher risk of running out of no fault insurance benefits in Ontario for medical, rehabilitation, attendant care and other benefits. And contrary to our government's position - they will not be able to protect themselves by increasing insurance coverage.
