ABC's of Chronic Pain - Part Two

This second chronic pain management seminar follows up on Part One of Dr. Jacobs’ discussions regarding the etiology and diagnosis chronic pain. Here, in Part Two, Dr. Jacobs, pain management physician, talks about treatment of chronic pain.

Dr. Jacobs effectively points out that a pain management team is essential in the treatment of chronic pain. He notes that chronic pain sufferers often experience a plethora of problems arising from their chronic pain including disability, anxiety, depression, financial problems and legal challenges. Therefore, chronic pain must be treated by a team with expertise in each of these areas. Chronic pain management involves teams of chiropractors, medical doctors, massage therapists, lawyers, and financial advisors among others.

Dr. Jacobs notes that chronic pain is treatable. Medical management will help control and treat the chronic pain, as opposed to simply masking the underlying problem. Pharmacological (drug) treatments can help to stop the sensitization, which is a chronic pain concept discussed in Part One of the ABC’s of Chronic Pain Management. Pharmacological treatment of chronic pain revert the chemistry of the nerve back to normal. Appropriate drug treatments can treat chronic pain by preventing the nerves from becoming abnormal. Dr. Jacobs sets out different pharmacological treatments for chronic pain including anti-inflammatory medications, anti-epileptics, opioids, botox, nerve blocks, and rhizolysis (burning nerves), and certified chronic pain management programs.

Chronic pain management programs include many disciplines including medical intervention, pharmacological treatment, psychiatric intervention, group therapies, and biofeedback. Dr. Jacobs endorses chronic pain management programs as an effective method to deal with chronic pain issues.
